2 Basic Steps to Improving Your Golf Swing
April 24, 2010 by admin

The game of golf is truly an individual sport. The basics are the same for everyone; however, due to the differences in people’s body types no two people will ever have the same golf swing. Each person will have to adapt their bodies to perform a proper golf swing in their own way. Taking the time to develop your own method of playing golf will greatly improve your enjoyment and success at the game. Practicing the basic fundamentals of the game until they are ingrained in your muscles will lead to confidence on the course, and that confidence will lead to success and enjoyment of the game.
One of the most basic steps that you can put into action and see an immediate improvement to your golf swing is to keep your head still and look straight at the ball. The position of your head should be straight in line with your spine, and your nose should be raised up a bit so that when you start to swing, your left shoulder fits under your chin. Many players tuck their heads into their chests to try and keep their heads still and look straight down at the golf ball. Unfortunately, they cannot perform a proper golf swing while in this position.
If you are one of the many that are having difficulty keeping your head straight and an eye on the ball try the following. The next time you approach the ball, assume the correct stance with your feet and knees in position but keep your head and back straight, bend forward slightly at the waist and look straight at the ball. If you try and take a swing in this position, your left shoulder will most likely hit your chin. While keeping your eyes on the ball, raise your head slowly until your left shoulder does not hit your chin. Make sure that your head does not move from side to side by keeping your eyes fixed on the ball. Slowly go through the backswing and downswing portions of your golf swing. Do not hit the ball and do the follow through. Practice this portion of your golf swing focusing on keeping your head straight and eyes on the ball.
Practice this exercise in your backyard for about 25 times in a row and then take a break and relax a bit, then start again. Make minor corrections to your head and body position as needed to keep your eyes straight on the ball and your left shoulder from hitting your chin. This exercise will "train" your body, and your muscles will "remember" the correct position you need to be in to perform the movement correctly. Think about any sports athlete, they train and train to place their bodies in the correct stance and position to properly execute the movements necessary to be successful in their particular sport. You are doing the same thing by "training" your body to keep your head straight and position itself so that you can successfully execute a proper golf swing.
Another basic step that can work greatly towards improving your golf swing is to relax. I know it is easier said then done, especially when you are getting ready to put all your power into drive with an audience of either your co-workers, or better still your friends who will not let you forget it if you mess up. However, relaxing your muscles will help you to maintain the proper balance that is important to a great golf swing. Regardless of the golf clubs you use, your balance is the primary foundation of your golf swing, and the way to achieve good balance is to practice. A good way to practice improving your balance is to assume the address position with your club, relax your body and try holding it there for about 30 seconds. Does it feel like you have more weight on one foot or the other? Is one part of your body more tense then another?
Keeping your head straight and maintaining good balance are just two basic parts of a great golf swing. The exercises given above are just two ways that you can start training now to improve your golf swing. You can work on either one separately, or combine them together into one exercise. Improving your golf swing begins and ends with you. Training the muscles of your body to properly perform specific movements takes time and practice. The effort spent improving your golf swing will pay off on the course. Through exercise and practice, you will be able to slip into the proper address position and perform an effortless, powerful golf swing and feel just as if you were sliding your hand into a warm soft glove.

Secrets to a Consistent Golf Swing

The secrets to a consistent golf swing are hidden in the laws of physics
I was recently discussing the golf swing with a physics professor I had met on the golf course. He said there are really only 2 physical principals that impact a consistent golf swing (he described the forces due to gravity as being negligible in the golf swing).
The physics professor went on to say - "The truth is COAM and Torque is by far the 2 most important factors when learning to build a consistent golf swing."
COAM being the Conservation Of Angular Momentum - the principal that states angular momentum of an object remains constant as long as no external force or moment acts on that object.
COAM says if the object (club head) is brought closer to the axis (formed by the golfer's stable spine), it speeds up. If the club head is moved further out, it slows down. In a consistent golf swing, as the player rotates the club, the hands move farther from the body or axis and slow down. This reduction in momentum feeds into the much lighter club and increases the speed of the club head in the last part of the stroke, in a whiplash type of effect, increasing the force of impact on the ball.
To further illustrate Conservation Of Angular Momentum, picture an ice skater performing a stationary spin on ice. When the skater moves her arms closer to her body, she spins much faster...as the arms are brought farther from the body, the ice skater spins slower.
He described the other principal in a consistent golf swing as Torque.
Torque equals Force X Length(T = FL); where "F" being Force and "L" being length of the lever in our case the length of the golf club shaft.
"F" or Force can be further broken down using Newton's equation for Force; F= ma (Force equals mass X acceleration)
So we now have Torque = mass x acceleration x length (T = maL)
"m" being the mass of the club head, "a" being the acceleration of the club head, and "L" being the length of the golf club.
It is Torque or the twisting action of the golf club that gives real leverage in a consistent golf swing.
Now that you know a little golf swing physics, how do you maximize the principals of Torque and COAM into YOUR golf swing? The secret - you must develop the late hit or "lag" into your golf swing.
The truth is, you will unleash an enormous amount of power at impact because of the principals of Torque and COAM.
The secret is to find a golf instruction system that teaches you how to develop the late hit into your golf swing or you will never reach your potential as a golfer.
It is simply amazing how fast you can build a consistent golf swing by learning the late hit. This is because your swing will now be in harmony with the physical laws of nature - this is how a 150LB golfer can crush 340 yard drives - he is able to harness an incredible amount of power due to Torque and COAM!

Golf Exercises to Help Maintain a Fixed Spine Angle in Your Golf Swing
January 18, 2010 by admin
Golf exercises can help you maintain a fixed spine angle in your golf swing. A number of components are required for successful golf shots. No matter if you are on the tee box or hitting a short iron shot to the green a fixed spine angle is necessary. As we all know alterations in your spine angle can easily cause compensations in your swing. Leading to miss-hits and bogies rather than birdies. One of these keys to improving your spine angle lies within golf fitness exercises and training.
Overall, a number of physical components are necessary for the execution of most any golf shot. The reason for this is connected to the requirement of drawing the club through a long range of motion on the correct swing plane. This leaves you with little room for error in either tempo or sequencing of every phase in the swing.
Now, in order to accomplish the requirements of the golf swing the amateur golfer must have certain levels of flexibility, balance, strength, and power. If the body is lacking in any or all of these physical components, execution of the golf swing may be difficult. So in order to provide you with the opportunity to hit your golf shots successfully we can implement golf fitness exercises into your training program to develop these parameters.
A quick review of the golf swing indicates a requirement of maintaining a fixed spine angle as well as additional postural positions. In order for your body to perform these requirements of the golf swing the muscles of your body require certain levels of strength.
Strength relative to the golf swing can be defined as the ability of your muscles to exert the required levels of force to perform the movements within the swing. If your body is lacking in the levels of strength required of the golf swing. The ability to maintain your spine angle and postural positions of the swing will be compromised.
As stated previously the process of developing muscular strength for the golf swing is relatively simple. It consists of utilizing golf specific strength training exercises to develop the required levels of strength to maintain a consistent spine angle in your golf swing.
One such strength exercises I often use with professional golfers for this goal is Bent Knee Marches. This is a simple exercise to perform and is very proficient at developing strength in the hips, abdominals, lower back, and hamstrings. All of which are important muscles in the maintenance of your spine angle.
Begin the exercise lying with your back flat on the floor, knees bent, and feet together. Point your toes upward by pressing the heels into the floor. Elevate your hips off the floor inline with your knees and shoulders.
Slowly lift the left heel off the floor maintaining a bend in the knee and hips elevated. Continue to lift the heel 3-4 inches off the floor, pause for one second, and return to the starting position of the exercise. Repeat the "lift' with the right heel. Alternate back and forth for 10-15 repetitions.
Keep in mind there are a number of components required in the execution of your golf swing. One of which is a fixed spine angle. And order to maintain a fixed spine angle certain levels of muscular strength are required of your body. Muscular strength for the golf swing can be improved through golf exercises such as the one described above. Keep in mind it is a series of golf exercises within a golf fitness program that can have a positive effect on both your spine angle and golf swing.

How to Keep Left Arm Straight During Golf Swing
November 22, 2009 by admin

By John Lynch
You've been hearing it since you first learned how to swing a golf club - "you gotta keep your left arm straight during the golf swing".
The trouble is; how do you learn to keep your left arm straight?
A lotta golfers who think they keep their left arm straight during the golf swing are shocked when they see themselves swing on video...their left elbow usually breaks down somewhere during the backswing...or the downswing.
Some golfers are so intent on keeping their left arm straight during the golf swing they become rigid with little shoulder turn.
So, how do you learn to keep the left arm straight during the golf swing?
First, a little lesson on the physics of the golf swing...
Experts on the physics of golf refer to the "Magic Triangle" or "Eternal Triangle" that is formed in an ideal golf swing. This is the triangle formed by the golfer's left arm, the golf club, and an imaginary line from the golfer's left shoulder to the center of the club face. For best results, this triangle should be maintained from the start of the backswing to just before the impact area when you release the club head. This will produce a high speed impact with the ball as described in detail by Joe Dante in his top selling golf instructional book - "Four Magic Moves To Winning Golf".
By focusing on maintaining the magic triangle throughout the golf swing you are taken advantage of a powerful physical force...the conservation of angular momentum...the principal that states angular momentum of an object remains constant as long as no external force or moment acts on that object.
If the object (club head) is brought closer to the axis (formed by the golfer's stable spine), it speeds up. If the club head is moved further out, it slows down. In a golf swing, as the player rotates the club, the hands move farther from the body or axis and slow down. This reduction in momentum feeds into the much lighter club and increases the speed of the club head in the last part of the stroke, in a whiplash type of effect, increasing the force of impact on the ball.
The truth is, if your left arm does not stay straight during the golf swing, you are losing out on the benefits of centrifugal force because your swing arc is smaller. Think of your left arm as a spoke in a wheel and your swing arc as the circumference of the wheel. By not keeping your left arm straight you are essentially shortening the spoke thereby reducing the circumference. You are also upsetting the positive effects of conservation of angular momentum and thus reducing the speed between club face and ball.
Now that you understand the physics behind the benefits of keeping your left arm straight during the golf swing...
How do you learn to do so?
Assuming your golf swing fundamentals such as grip, stance, and alignment are relatively sound, all you have to do is simply become aware of this magic triangle. Don’t try to force this triangle…just become aware of it next time you go to the range…
Then, just before impact, release all that stored energy you will have in the club head, like cracking a whip!
After a while you will be shocked at how solidly you can strike the ball…
You’ll be surprised how straight your left arm becomes during the golf swing just by shining the light of awareness upon this magic triangle during the golf swing.
You will now have a tiger by the tail so use this new found power wisely!
Hit ‘em Long and Straight!

Mastering the Golf Swing
August 27, 2009 by admin
You don't have to understand all the ins and outs of the golf swing in order to play well, but it certainly will help.
A person usually cannot pick up a golf club for the first time and swing it with perfection.
But, the body can learn the correct way to swing a golf club.
One gotcha is to be sure to NOT lift your head to view the alignment of the club face during the back swing and/or downswing.
The best focusing points for a consistent swing are:
1) efficient golf swing mechanics and
2) the body.
By keeping your joints supple and flexible, you could help ensure the length of your golf swing and even your club head speed.
Golf Swing Mechanics and Your Body
In order to learn efficient golf swing mechanics, the golf swing has to match your body's ability.
The ability to maintain your body in the correct "balanced" position, while going through your golf swing, requires intense neuromuscular control.
Training muscles involved in the golf swing, particularly the lower body and torso muscles, helps to hit the ball a greater distance.
The key is to play with optimal golf swing mechanics to reduce stress on your spine. If you ignore either the body or the mechanics, it would be safe to say that your golf swing and game will suffer.
It is also important to mention that the motion of a golf swing, if done incorrectly, can cause injuries in many parts of the body.
Injuries to the key muscle groups used in the golf swing can be significantly lowered by improving flexibility.
Remember Your Posture
Your posture sets the tone for an unobstructed, free-flowing and uncomplicated golf swing.
Every error in your posture magnifies itself throughout your golf swing, and nowhere is that more amplified than on the backswing.
Look at your posture.
Proper posture allows you to make the golf swing and protect your back. You should focus to physically try to stay in your golf posture until the end of your swing.
Finally, The Swing
Without question the golf swing is one of the most important aspects about the game of golf.
Timing is the key to a great swing.
The set-up is the first crucial part of golf swing timing. If your swing is off, the golf ball could fall too short or go too far.
Allow your eyes to go to the ball to begin your swing. Remember your posture and your stance.
Now the backswing. The backswing does not hit the golf ball, but this does not mean that executing a good backswing is not important.
All of the motion ties into one another. It can be hard to master, as the golf swing is not a natural motion for most people.
But practicing and focusing on key aspects will go a long way to improving your swing.
Remember your body is one of these key aspects.
A strong lower back is critical to making an effective turning motion in the golf swing. And don't rush into it. Never try to hit a golf ball until your swing is second nature.
Now that We Have the Basics, How to Improve
Practice, practice and more practice. This doesn't necessarily mean time spent every day, but it does mean to focus on all the key aspects each time you do practice.
Two aspects require tuning and development of you wish to improve the power in your golf swing; timing and form.
You can work on drills to improve your golf swing timing, always remembering to start with a solid setup. In regard to form, powerful abdominals will improve posture at the address and help to prevent lower-back pain associated with the golf swing.
Also, by working on your stance and finishing position, your golf swing is on its way to giving you a perfect game.
Maintaining Power
As time goes on you may be losing your ability to produce power in your golf swing.
An inefficient golf swing decreases the amount of power delivered to golf swing. Great players attest that focussing on proper body stance and a smooth, focused swing maximizes your power and develops an athletic golf swing with perfect balance.
Many things go into playing a great game of golf, none as important as having the proper golf swing and body form.
This will not just increase your ability in the game, but also your enjoyment.
