These are the top 5 golf swing tips handed down by generations of golf pros that are pure RUBBISH!!
These 5 golf swing falsehoods have ruined more golf swings than I care to imagine. I believe these 5 so called "golf swing tips" are the reason the average golfer's handicap has stayed the same for the past 20 years - Even with all the advancements in golf equipment technology.
I will be pulling the curtain back on some golf swing tips you may consider as gospel...so please keep an open mind.
Top 5 Golf Fallacies That Are Ruining Golfer's Game:
1. RELAX - Pure rubbish! How many times have you heard this golf swing tip from a golf pro or a playing partner? The golf swing is a violent action - is there any other violent action you take when you relax? - of course not - This is foolish advice.
2. Be Loose. This is the second cousin of "Relax". When you are "loose" in the golf swing your hips are NOT restricted therefore you will NOT have that important coil in your backswing robbing you of much power.
3. Take The Club Back Inside - More rubbish! I'm sure you've heard many times how the correct golf swing is from the inside. So some golfers yank the club way inside early in their backswing thinking this will allow them to hit from the inside. These golfers are shocked when they still hit the golf ball from the outside. Hitting the golf ball from the inside comes from proper hip and shoulder action at the start of the downswing. You can take the club back way outside and still hit the ball from the inside - look at Jim Furyk - he takes the club way back to the outside however his move from the top of the swing is pure and from the inside.
4. The Golf Club Is On The Same Plane Going Back As It Is Coming Down. Again, this golf swing tip has been misguiding golfers for generations. The path of the clubface is much more to the inside during the downswing than during the backswing in a sound golf swing. This is because a proper golf swing has a lateral shift of the hips which drops the club into the all important "slot" early in the downswing. This action of the left hip automatically puts the path of the clubface much more to the inside than the path going back.
5. Turn The Hips To The Left To Start The Downswing. This golf fallacy causes golfers to "spin out" during the downswing and the result is a total mis-hit of the golf ball. Turning the hips to start the downswing forces you to throw the golf club to the outside causing terrible mis-hits. Again, the correct move is a lateral shift of the left hip to start the downswing and the hips will then turn automatically. It is possible to NOT have this lateral shift and still turn the hips from the top - however, it is IMPOSSIBLE to have the lateral shift of the left hip to start the downswing and the hips NOT turn.

Golf Swing Takeaway Tip

I’ll never forget the time a few years ago when my brother in law Steve explained to me how he discovered a major break through in his golf swing. He describes this golf swing takeaway tip as “lightning in a bottle”…the true holy grail of golf!
Steve told me he had been sitting at an 8 handicap for about 4 years and was getting very frustrated at his lack of improvement. He practiced diligently however he had truly reached a plateau in his golf game.
He went through about 4 golf pros during this time and every one of them told him there was nothing wrong with his golf swing. Eventually he started playing less and less golf and was about ready to give it up altogether.
Steve said while on vacation with his family he was browsing through an old book store on Martha’s Vineyard when he came across a used copy of Joe Dante’s “Four Magic Moves to Winning Golf” written in 1972. He said he couldn't put the book down so out of courtesy to the store owner he bought it.
Steve showed me the book and as I leafed through it I was amazed at all the beautifully drawn illustrations showing how to swing a golf club properly. Andy Brown has since revised this book for the 21st century and offers many media formats to read or listen to the book.
Steve turned to the chapter that explains “the early backward wrist break” and told me this one magic move has totally transformed his golf game! He went on to say how golf pros never tell you HOW to break the wrists during the backswing for whatever reason. Steve believes the first 18 inches of the backswing are the most critical.
Most golfers fan the clubface open early in the backswing causing them to swing the club way too much to the inside…this knocks the swing off plane early in the backswing. Golfers then usually spend the rest of the golf swing trying to adjust so they can just make contact with the ball…not a good recipe for success!
The book goes on to say there should be no open or closing of the clubface early in the backswing…if you correctly perform the early backward wrist break your swing will be on plane early in the swing…Steve says he feels like the club is swinging itself…a truly effortless swing!
I am happy to say that my brother in law Steve is now a scratch golfer, thanks to this one magic move that has transformed his golf game!
When you make the backward wrist break perfectly - only one knuckle of your left hand (right handed golfers) and two knuckles of your right hand should be visible and the golf club should be parallel to your target line.

Learn the Biomechanics of the Golf Swing

The golfer with a clear understanding of the biomechanics of the golf swing will have a huge advantage over the golfer who doesn't have a clue.
First, the definition of biomechanics - "The study of the action of external and internal forces on the living body, esp. on the skeletal system."
Anyone who has played this great game of golf knows intimately the external and internal forces on the body when you swing a golf club.
I soon realized the complexities in not only understanding these external and internal forces in a sound golf swing, but also in the managing of these forces.
After much study and much play, I realized the secret to a sound golf swing is first you must understand how these forces work in the golf swing, then you must put these internal and external forces in alignment so they work in harmony.
This is key to developing a powerful golf swing you can repeat over and over again.
The biomechanics of golf swing operate along the laws of physics and anything we do that works against these laws will only further delay the learning process.
I hope this scientific discussion on the biomechanics of the golf swing helps you as much as it has helped me.
Jon Barrett of Golf Swing Eureka carried out a survey and asked golfers the question: Which part of the body contributes the most to club head speed?
The answer to this question was to make a profound impact on my understanding of the biomechanics of the golf swing. Most golf pros NEVER talk about this fact yet it is the determining factor in creating effortless power in the golf swing.
Only 20% got the answer right!
That's only 1 in every 5 golfers!
And these golfers ranged from scratch golfer to high handicapper.
Curiously this figure relates to another golfing statistic - Do you know that only 20% of golfers have a handicap of less than 18?
I believe these same 20% of golfers understand this crucial biomechanical aspect of the golf swing.
Which part of your body do you think contributes the most to club head speed?
Is it:
- Shoulders
- Arms
- Hands

The answer:
***THE HANDS CONTRIBUTE THE MOST TO CLUB HEAD SPEED!!!***
High handicap golfers usually "hold on" through the impact area causing a weak hit resulting in a slice or a push shot.
The reason High handicappers "hold on" through impact I believe is because they do NOT have a clear biomechanical understanding of what creates club head speed...
Let me make an illustration that will "hammer home" (excuse the pun) this biomechanical concept in the golf swing. Try to hammer a nail without breaking your wrist...just use your arms and body...keep your wrist rigid...not much power, huh?
Now hammer the nail by only breaking or releasing your wrist, no body, no arms...much more power huh? You are using biomechanical angular and centrifugal forces to create much power with very little effort...
Much like golf!
Have you ever seen that trick shot golfer on the golf channel? He can hit a golf ball 275 yards while kneeling on the ground. This totally blows the cover off the notion it is the lower body that contributes most to club head speed...don't ya think?
Do you think all his power still comes from his lower body?
Effortless power comes from a full release of the hands through the impact area...have you ever watched pro golfer Sergio Garcia's hand action through the golf ball? This is how a 150LB person can crush 300 yard drives...they have mastered this move.
By far the most important force in the biomechanics of the golf swing is a full hand release through the golf ball...
Once you learn a full release through the golf ball you will be on your way to great golf...
